oaf
- oaf
‘You great oaf’ is now typically a playful insult used by a woman to a man, referring to his clumsiness and hinting at his stupidity. That phrase is used in such a way in Edna Ferber’s Showboat, for instance. In Henry’s War, by Jeremy Brooks, ‘you oaf’ is similarly friendly.
The expression becomes more genuinely contemptuous in The Ginger Man, by J.P.Donleavy, when a man calls another ‘you stupid intolerable oaf’, though he says this silently to himself.
The word came into use in the seventeenth century and is probably a form of ‘elf’, since its original meaning was an elf’s child, a changeling, a misbegotten half-wit. Its pronunciation and written form seem to have gone through many changes, and it is likely that its meaning varies from speaker to speaker.
